Dimapur: The Sümi Totimi Hoho (STH), the apex women’s organisation representing the Sümi Naga community, has issued a firm directive restricting unauthorised creation or modification of traditional Sümi attire and ornaments.
In an official statement, the STH underscored the importance of preserving the authenticity and sanctity of Sümi cultural wear, referring to a resolution passed by its Executive Council on June 6, 2025, at the Sümi Hoho Ki.
The directive, it informed, aligns with Article 4 (d), (e), and (f) of the STH Constitution, which mandates the protection, preservation, restriction on modification of Sümi traditional attire and ornaments in any manner. It also explicitly prohibits the creation/introduction of new Sümi wraparound or shawls without prior approval from the STH.
According to the STH, any individual, group, or designer found modifying or creating new versions of traditional wraparounds, shawls, or ornaments without permission from the STH will be held accountable and face penalties imposed by the STH.
“It is hereby decreed that no individual, group or designers shall create or make any modification to the Sümi traditional attire and ornaments without the official permission from the STH. Anyone violating this notification has to bear the consequenc-es and face any penalty imposed by the STH,” it stated.
It expressed concern over increasing instances of unauthorised modern adaptations of the traditional attires and ornaments, stating these practices contribute to confusion, diminish authenticity, and risk the erosion of Sümi cultural heritage.
“Unauthorised modern adaptations of the traditional attires and ornaments are posing a threat to the traditional attire and ornaments thereby creating confusions, loss of authenticity and a gradual erosion of the Sümi cultural heritage,” it stated.
The STH further said that since its inception it has been standing strongly on its core principles of valuing, honouring, preserving and upholding the rich cultural heritage of the Sümi. “We continue to remain committed towards preserving and appreciating our traditional attire and ornaments in its original form as was passed down to us,” it added.
The organisation has invited constructive engagement on how to collectively contribute towards safeguarding and promoting the cultural legacy of the Sumi tribe.
“We are happy to provide guidance and support to ensure that your design meets the set requirements,” it stated.
