Kohima: The Department of Zoology, Kohima Science College (Autonomous), Jotsoma, successfully organised its 2nd Birding Competition from December 2 to 4, 2024.
Themed “Know Your Feathered Friends,” the event aimed to raise awareness about avian biodiversity, ecological conservation, and the role of wildlife sanctuaries in sustaining bird populations.
Twelve participants, including students, faculty members, and birding enthusiasts, took part in the competition, representing different houses of Winfest 2024, making it a diverse and engaging event.
The event commenced on December 2 with an orientation session for participants, followed by a full-day birding activity on December 3 at Puliebadze Wildlife Sanctuary and its surrounding areas. From 5 AM to 4 PM, participants identified and documented a wide range of bird species, noting their habitats, behaviours, and calls.
The competition concluded on December 4 with a valedictory session chaired by Dr. Lilongchem Thyug, Associate Professor. The panel of judges included Lansothung Lotha, the Range Forest Officer, and the Nagaland Forest Department (Special Judge). Dr Chetan Kachhara, HoD, Department of Physics, Dr Vethselo Doulo, Associate Professor, Department of Zoology, Rusokhrienuo Theunuo, Assistant Professor, Department of Zoology.
Speaking as the Special Judge, Lansothung Lotha emphasized the importance of ethical birding practices and encouraged participants to adopt birding as a hobby. He stressed the need to understand bird habitats and behaviours, highlighting the role of such activities in promoting conservation.

The competition witnessed impressive results, with the highest bird count recorded by the winning team at 51 species.
