Kohima: Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio inaugurated several newly constructed permanent structures at the Naga Heritage Village, Kisama, on Tuesday, marking a significant upgrade ahead of the 25th Hornbill Festival.
Highlighting the importance of the new facilities, Rio said the permanent infrastructure commemorates the festival’s silver jubilee and aims to enhance the tourist experience.
He pointed out how the Hornbill festival is no longer just a festival for Nagaland but a platform attracting national and international participants.
Rio highlighted the festival’s role in showcasing Nagaland’s rich cultural heritage, including its traditions, textiles, ethnic cuisine, and more. He added that the permanent infrastructure would help sustain the celebration of Naga heritage year-round.
Among the new developments is a main plaza with a gallery, and a pavilion for industries named Handloom and Crafts, developed in collaboration with the Ministry of Textiles. Rio expressed gratitude to the ministry for its support, alongside funding from the state government.
The Chief Minister urged Kohima-based tribal communities to host their festivals at Kisama, emphasising that such events could benefit local farmers, weavers, and craftsmen while creating employment opportunities.
Reflecting on the historical significance of preserving culture, Rio pointed to the 1873 Bengal Eastern Frontier Regulation and the 16-point agreement, which helped maintain Nagaland’s unique identity through the Inner Line Permit system.
Despite challenges like weather conditions and delayed material supplies, Rio commended contractors and workers for their dedication. He assured that additional enhancements would be completed soon.
The event also saw the inauguration of the International Morung and other structures developed by various departments, including Art & Culture, Industries & Commerce, Task Force for Music & Arts, and Youth Resources & Sports. Additionally, Rio launched the Hornbill Tourism App to enhance visitor engagement during the festival.
The inaugural ceremony was chaired by Chief Secretary J Alam, with the invocation pronounced by Rev. Mekhale Yhoshü, pastor of Kigwema Baptist Church.
