Kohima: In response to the Gauhati High Court’s recent ruling quashing the appointment of 935 constables, Nagaland’s Director General of Police (DGP) Rupin Sharma has outlined the next steps for the state police department.
The High Court found that the positions had not been advertised prior to the appointments, prompting the DGP to emphasise the importance of adhering to legal processes.
“The High Court has questioned the appointments of those 935 constables on one single criteria that the posts were no advertised and they have asked us to advertise those posts and in due course of time we will advertise those posts for recruitment,” the state police chief said on Monday.
While the state prepares to re-advertise the constable positions, DGP Sharma noted that the affected constables have legal avenues available to them. “The constables can seek redress through appeal or revision petitions to either the Gauhati High Court or the Supreme Court. We will await the outcomes of these legal remedies,” he added.
Sharma reiterated the commitment of the police department to ensure that every citizen, including the constables impacted by the court’s ruling, has access to legal recourse.
“They can go either on appeal or on review or revision petitions to the Gauhati High Court or the principal bench or to the Supreme Court. So, we would just wait for sometime while we are taking care of the administrative processes involved because we have directions to complete the process in months. In the meantime, the constables also have legal remedies, so during that process if they can obtain any other order which are to their benefit or which are different set of instructions we would follow that also,” he added.
