Dimapur: The Dimapur Naga Students’ Union (DNSU) has expressed serious concern over the increasing use of drugs among youth and students in Dimapur, despite ongoing efforts by the police and civil society organizations (CSOs) to address the problem.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the DNSU highlighted that drug abuse is escalating and affecting all sections of society. “Despite the efforts of the police department and various CSOs, the supply and sale of drugs in the district have been on the rise, and it remains a major issue,” the student body noted.
The DNSU has consistently raised the issue of drug abuse, but the persistence of the problem has led them to call for stronger and more effective measures.
“The Union urges the concerned department to take up measures which will further strengthen the effort to curb the menace of drugs and up the ante in the war against drugs in the Dimapur district in particular and the entire state in general,” it emphasised.
Among its key demands, the DNSU is calling for the establishment of more rehabilitation centers to support recovering drug addicts. The Union also appealed to churches and prayer centers to play a role by offering counseling and rehabilitation services to those struggling with substance abuse.
The DNSU urged the the government to set up more rehabilitation centres to accommodate recovering addicts. Churches and prayer centres, it advised, should also establish counseling services to educate their congregations and assist recovering users.
Additionally, the DNSU called on the public to remain vigilant and report any cases of drug sales or abuse in their communities to the authorities, pledging its full cooperation with law enforcement agencies in curbing drug abuse in the region.
