Kohima: Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio on Saturday revealed that the state government would recommend Hokato Hotozhe Sema, the first-ever Olympic medalist from Nagaland for the Arjuna Award, India’s second-highest athletic honour.
announced a cash reward of Rs 1.5 crore for, in recognition of his historic bronze medal win at the Paralympic Games in the Shot Put event.
The announcement was made following Hotozhe’s achievement at the international sports stage, which has brought immense pride to both Nagaland and India.
“He’s made India proud & Nagaland shine. Being the 1st Olympic Medalist from Nagaland, I’m happy to announce that the Nagaland Govt will extend a cash reward of ₹1.5Cr,” Rio wrote on X.
In addition to these honors, the Chief Minister also revealed that the state would approach the Indian Army and the Ministry of Defence to seek a promotion for Hotozhe as an extraordinary case, in recognition of his sporting achievements and his gallant service to the nation.
“The State Govt. will recommend his name to GoI to bestow him with Arjuna Awards. It’ll also take up with the Indian Army & Min. of Defence for his promotion as an extraordinary case not only for his Olympic & Asian Games achievements but also for his galant service to the Nation,” Rio wrote.

Further, Rio said that several initiatives to promote sports in Hotozhe’s name will be undertaken by the State Government to inspire future generations of athletes.
“Congratulations once again, Mr. Hokato Hotozhe Sema. You have made every Naga proud. May you continue to bring laurels to our people,” Rio added.
