Kohima: As Nagaland prepares for the much-anticipated Urban Local Bodies (ULB) elections, 64 candidates have already been elected uncontested, while 523 remain in the fray.
According to data from the State Election Commission (SEC), among the 64 uncontested candidates, the Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) secured the highest number with 45 candidates.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has seven candidates, the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) five, the Indian National Congress (INC) three, and two candidates each are from the Naga People’s Front (NPF) and Independent.
This year’s ULB elections, set to take place on June 26, are notable for the inclusion of a 33% reservation for women, marking the first such election in the state.
While the poll is set to take place after two decades, the elections will proceed without participation from the ENPO areas, which encompass six districts in Nagaland.
Despite the ENPO’s resolution to abstain, some nominations were initially filed in four out of the six districts but were subsequently withdrawn.

Specifically, Mon district saw nominations from Aboi Town Council (four candidates), Naginimkra Town Council (eight candidates), and Tizit (nine candidates). In Kiphire, eight nominations were filed for Pungro. Longleng district recorded 13 nominations, and Shamator district had 19 nominations, two of which were rejected.
The SEC reported a total of 670 nominations for the ULB polls, with four rejected due to incomplete documentation and 79 withdrawn. Consequently, 64 candidates were elected unopposed, leaving 523 to contest in the elections on June 26.
