Kohima: The aftermath of Cyclone Remal and the onset of the monsoon season have wreaked havoc across Nagaland, with reports of extensive damage emerging from various districts.
The Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA) of the Home Department, through an update, informed that on the night of May 25, a severe windstorm hit Chuchuyimlang village in Mokokchung district, severely affecting nine households.
Similarly, Noksen subdivision in Tuensang district reported that 36 households were heavily damaged by a windstorm on May 24. In a delayed report, a house was completely destroyed in Awotsakili village, Zunheboto district.
Tragically, a seven-year-old boy drowned in Laruri village, Meluri subdivision, and another drowning incident was reported from Doyang Dam in Wokha district.
The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has been deployed for search and rescue operations. Notably, for the first time in the state’s history, an underwater drone is being used by the NSDMA for these efforts. The search and rescue mission, involving the NDRF, SDRF, District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) Wokha, and local volunteers, is ongoing.

In another tragic incident, a 73-year-old man was crushed to death by a falling retaining wall in Rekizu ward, Pfutsero under Phek district. His wife sustained injuries in the incident. Additionally, a mudslide triggered by incessant rains has been reported from Kikruma village in Phek district.
In Kiphire district, heavy rains on May 28 have caused significant damage to public infrastructure and households. The NSDMA is still compiling damage reports as of this filing.
The NSDMA urged District Disaster Management Authorities and related departments to remain alert and vigilant as the monsoon season progresses. They have also advised the public to avoid fishing, picnicking, and other activities near water bodies during this period.
