Dimapur: The 7th Assam Rifles marked the 33rd anniversary of Operation Dudhi on Sunday, with a commemorative event held at the Battalion in Ghaspani, Chümoukedima.
This operation, conducted on May 5, 1991, in the Kupwara district of Jammu and Kashmir, stands as a remarkable chapter in the history of Indian armed forces, renowned for its success in countering insurgency in the Kashmir Valley.
Led by Sub Padam Bahadur Chhetri, Kirti Chakra, and a team of 14 Jawans armed with self-loading rifles and two light machine guns, the operation resulted in the elimination of 72 highly weaponised Pakistan-based terrorists, with 13 others apprehended. 118 weapons, predominantly AK series rifles, and nearly 80,000 bullets were seized.
Operation Dudhi, lasting over 72 hours, was executed at the Dudhi post in the Chowkibal Area of Kupwara District during the early 1990s when Kashmir faced heightened terrorism from across the border.
The event hosted all soldiers who participated in the operation, honoring their valor and contributions. Lt. Gen PC Nair, the Directorate General of Assam Rifles, graced the occasion, engaging with retired Junior Commissioned Officers (JCOs) and other ranks who took part in the operation.
Speaking to the press, DGAR Lt Gen Pradeep Chandran Nair emphasised the uniqueness and significance of Operation Dudhi, acknowledging its status as possibly the most successful counter-insurgency operation in India’s history. He lamented its relative obscurity in public memory due to its vintage nature.
Col Vikrant Gupta, Commandant 7 Assam Rifles, expressed pride in honoring the heroes of Operation Dudhi, recognising their sacrifices in service to the nation. Lt Gen Pradeep Chandran Nair’s visit reiterated Assam Rifles’ commitment to its veterans and Veernaris (brave women).
