Dimapur: The indefinite shutter down in Dimapur, orchestrated by the Dimapur Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI), as announced earlier this week began today. The streets of Dimapur, typically bustling with commercial activities on a normal weekday, now wear a deserted look as shops and business establishments across the district remained closed.
Dimapur, renowned as the commercial nucleus of Nagaland, is experiencing the brunt of the shutter down, affecting over 30,000 shops and business entities, according to figures provided by the DCCI. The closure encompasses a wide spectrum of commercial activities, grinding the district’s economic machinery to a halt.
The catalyst behind this drastic action, as elucidated in the DCCI’s press statement issued on Monday, April 22, is attributed to “unabated multiple taxation, intimidation, and summons” by various Naga Political Groups. The DCCI has staunchly declared that the shutter down will persist until the grievances voiced by the business community are effectively addressed.
Echoing their unwavering determination, the DCCI reaffirmed their commitment to the indefinite shutter down following a comprehensive closed-door meeting convened by the Deputy Commissioner of Dimapur. This pivotal gathering, held at the Conference Hall of the Deputy Commissioner’s office, saw the participation of representatives from administrative bodies, civil organizations, and trade associations.
Shikuto Sema, Vice President of DCCI, in a post-meeting address to the press, unequivocally affirmed the Chamber’s resolution to proceed with the planned indefinite shutter down. He emphasized the unified support garnered from various Civil Society Organizations, alongside the backing of prominent trade bodies such as the Confederation of Nagaland Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CNCCI) and the Business Association of Nagas (BAN).
Omega Yepthomi, Convenor of Public Grievances Cell of DCCI, reiterated that the shutter down will persist until concrete assurances regarding the safety of traders and the broader business community are provided by the state government.
As the shutter down casts a pall over Dimapur’s commercial landscape, stakeholders anxiously await a resolution to the impasse, cognizant of the profound ramifications it holds for the district’s economic vitality.
