Dimapur: In an exclusive interview with EastMojo, S Supongmeren Jamir, the Congress party’s Lok Sabha candidate for Nagaland’s lone Lok Sabha seat, shared insights into the party’s stance on key issues and its strategies for the upcoming elections.
When asked about the Congress party’s support for the demands of the Eastern Nagaland People’s Organisation (ENPO), Jamir reiterated the party’s commitment to addressing the concerns of the Eastern people.
He expressed optimism that a solution could be reached through consultation with the Government of India and the state government.
Reflecting on the Congress party’s performance in the last Assembly elections, Jamir acknowledged past challenges but emphasised the party’s revitalised organisational strength and focus on issue-based campaigning.
He highlighted the party’s opposition to the imposition of the Uniform Civil Code and its advocacy for preserving Article 371(A) and the state’s unique traditions.
Regarding criticism of the NDPP-BJP-NPF alliance, Jamir highlighted about the ideological differences, criticising the alliance’s alignment with the RSS and BJP. He positioned the Congress as the alternative to this alliance, advocating for principles that resonate with the people of Nagaland.
“Now our NDPP is supposed to be the regional party who can deliver justice to the people, but they have made an opposition-less government and they are in alliance with the BJP. So we are against the alliance, they’re ideologically going with the RSS, so we are against that,” he said.
Addressing the uphill battle against a candidate with substantial political backing, Jamir emphasised the importance of ideological alignment and grassroots support.

“This is an ideological war. And when it is an ideological war, the question of 60 MLAs doesn’t come, because the 60 MLAs were elected by the people. And when the people are with me, I don’t have any problems. And I should be one of them with the people, and will jointly fight together,” he said.
In the upcoming Lok Sabha elections in Nagaland, Jamir will face formidable opponents in the NDPP-BJP led People’s Democratic Alliance candidate Dr. Chumben Murry and Independent candidate Huyithung Tungoe Lotha.
