Kohima: The Nagaland Wrestling Association (NWA) announced the 29th edition of the Naga wrestling championship, set to take place on March 26 at the IG Stadium, Kohima.

With a prize pool of Rs 8.5 lakh, the championship promises an electrifying display of athleticism and skill.

During a press conference on Sunday, NWA president, Dr. Hiabe Zeliang, revealed that this biennial event will feature a total of 54 wrestlers, with 18 participants hailing from each of the Angami, Chakhesang, and Zeliang wrestling associations.

The stakes are high, with the champion slated to claim a grand prize of Rs 3.2 lakh, in addition to the prestigious Velahü Puro memorial prize, valued at Rs 30,000, and a commendable running trophy with a citation. Meanwhile, the runners-up will also be rewarded handsomely, with cash prizes of Rs 2.2 lakh, Rs 1.5 lakh, and Rs 1.2 lakh for the top three positions, respectively, along with citations.

Not stopping at the winners, the NWA ensures that even those who don’t clinch the top spots are acknowledged, with Rs 25,000 earmarked for each of the four losing quarterfinalists and Rs 30,000 for the group champion.

Dr Zeliang emphasised the importance of promoting Naga wrestling internationally, announcing the presence of esteemed dignitaries from the United World Wrestling and the World Belt Wrestling Federation as honoured guests. Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio will grace the occasion as the special guest, accompanied by Deputy CM TR Zeliang and Tenyimia legislators as patrons.

In a new move, Mamho Chakrüno, an elder from Chedema village and a fervent wrestling enthusiast, has been appointed as the championship’s ambassador, a testament to his passion and dedication to the sport.

Amid the fervour and excitement, Dr. Zeliang underscored the importance of maintaining decorum and civility among spectators, especially with international officials in attendance. With the government’s support in promoting the state’s traditional sport, he urged fans to exhibit exemplary behaviour.

Ensuring a seamless experience for attendees, Botsa Baptist Church will manage the grounds, offering ample parking at the hockey stadium and pay-and-use toilets on-site. Additionally, efforts are underway to provide streaming options for online viewers through Pay Per View.

NWA General Secretary Vilekho Bio extended a warm invitation to wrestling enthusiasts from across the state, reaffirming the standard ticket prices for various seating categories.
