Nagaland: ULB election with 33% women quota likely after Lok Sabha polls

Kohima: Nagaland chief minister Neiphiu Rio on Tuesday informed that the revision of the electoral roll is underway and polls to the civic bodies are likely to be held after the parliamentary elections.

During a post-budget press conference, Rio told reporters in Kohima that the State government is preparing for the conduct of the Urban Local Body (ULB) elections.

With the e-roll revision process underway, he said informed that funds for the same was sanctioned.

In November last year, the 60-member legislature, unanimously passed the Nagaland Municipal Bill 2023, mandating 33% women’s reservation in ULBs.

Prior to the enactment of the new Act, the implementation of 33% women reservation in the ULB elections was posed with several objections, even leading to an unrest in Nagaland in 2017.

Earlier during the budget presentation, Rio said that the Third Nagaland State Finance Commission has submitted its report to the State Government recommending the formula for sharing of revenues with the Urban Local Bodies and Urban Stations, and prescribed the vertical as well as horizontal formula for devolution.
