Kohima: Following the Centre’s move to scrap the Free Movement Regime (FMR) along the Indo-Myanmar, Nagaland governor La Ganesan informed that the state government is awaiting the Centre’s response to reconsider the suspension.
“This has evoked concern and anxiety among our people, especially those staying in the border areas. In view of the Naga history, the close tribal and family bonds shared by people across the borders, and also the traditional ownership of land in many cases transcending international boundaries, we are seeking reconsideration of the decision by the Central Government, and for the continuance of the FMR,” the governor said while addressing the ongoing Nagaland Legislative Assembly.
The governor informed that the state government had requested the Central Government to make appropriate regulations for movement of people across the borders in consultation with the state Government.
“We are also seeking to bring in the Village Council Authorities concerned in the entire system of regulations of the FMR for its proper and smooth implementation. We remain hopeful of an early and favorable response to our plea,” the governor said.

The Union Home Ministry had suspended the India-Myanmar Free Movement Regime citing “internal security” concerns. This regime allowed citizens from either nation to cross the border and travel up to 16km into each other’s territory without documents.
“It is Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi Ji’s resolve to secure our borders. The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has decided that the Free Movement Regime (FMR) between India and Myanmar be scrapped to ensure the internal security of the country and to maintain the demographic structure of India’s North Eastern States bordering Myanmar. Since the Ministry of External Affairs is currently in the process of scrapping it, MHA has recommended the immediate suspension of the FMR,” the union home minister had earlier said.
