Eastern Nagas to boycott elections over delay in Frontier Nagaland Territory demand

Kohima: Ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, the Eastern Nagaland Peoples’ Organisation (ENPO) has declared its decision to abstain from participating in both Central and State elections.

The decision stems from the prolonged delay in addressing the proposal for the creation of the ‘Frontier Nagaland Territory’ by the Government of India through the Ministry of Home Affairs.

According to a report by Nagaland Post, this resolution was reached unanimously during a joint consultative meeting convened on February 23, 2024, at Chenmoho Village, Mon district. The meeting witnessed the participation of ENPO, federating tribal bodies, frontal organisations, talk teams, and senior leaders.

This move echoes a similar stance taken by the ENPO in the past. In 2022, prior to the state Assembly polls, the apex tribal body of the Eastern Nagaland tribes had intensified its protest, demanding the establishment of a Frontier Naga Territory. However, the boycott was called off after the Centre provided “assurances” to the ENPO.

In the wake of the delay in fulfilling these assurances made by the Union Home Minister, mass rallies were organised earlier this month across Eastern Nagaland districts, reflecting widespread resentment and dissatisfaction among the populace.
