Dimapur: The Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) staged a silent protest today at the Income Tax office in Purana Bazar, Dimapur, expressing their discontent over the freezing of the Congress’s national-level bank accounts by the Income Tax Department.
Nagaland Congress President S. Supongmeren Jamir addressed a press conference, accusing the BJP of manipulating the state machinery within the Income Tax Department to freeze the party’s accounts. He revealed that two accounts had been seized – one belonging to the All India Congress Committee and the other to the All India Youth Congress.
Jamir emphasised the significance of the Youth Congress as a frontal agency advocating for the rights of the people and facilitating communication with grassroots-level individuals. He alleged that the BJP’s motive was to hinder the activities of the Indian Youth Congress, thereby restricting democratic processes.
Accusing the BJP government of undermining democracy, Jamir claimed that they aimed to promote the activities of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). He argued that the RSS, being a frontal agency of the BJP, was suppressing the Congress party’s activities nationwide, including in Nagaland.
Highlighting the situation in Assam, Jamir asserted that the BJP government was infringing upon the rights of minorities. He expressed the Congress party’s grievance over the actions of the Income Tax Department, labeling them as unconstitutional and part of the Modi government’s efforts to suppress democracy in the country.
Jamir called on the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and the Income Tax Department not to align with BJP policies and urged them not to contribute to the erosion of democracy in tandem with the government’s strategies.

Responding to a query about Nagaland Congress’ stance on the government’s decision to revoke the Foreigners (Protected Areas) Order along the India-Myanmar border, Jamir criticised the BJP’s approach.
He stated that while the Congress government had adopted the Look East policy during their tenure, the BJP, despite rhetoric about Northeast development, aimed to divide and separate the people of the region, particularly the Nagas fighting for their historical rights. Jamir asserted the NPCC’s opposition to the central government’s attempts to impose divisive rules and diminish the influence of issues relevant to the Northeast and Nagaland.
