Kohima: Nagaland Governor Jagdish Mukhi, who is also the governor of Assam, on Saturday informed that the Chief Minister of Assam has “positively indicated for equally dividing the proceeds of Petroleum and Oil exploration and extraction between the two states” in three sectors of the Disputed Area Belt (DAB).
While addressing the 11th session of the 13th Nagaland Legislative Assembly (NLA), Mukhi said that the state government is taking steps to resolve issues with regard to oil and petroleum exploration.
In response to the steps that were taken by the Nagaland government, he said that it has received an indication from the Assam government to equally divide the proceeds of Petroleum and Oil exploration and extraction between the two states in sector A, B & C in DAB area.
Further, Mukhi sought the cooperation of the Government of India and the Assam government in resolving the matter.
Outside the DAB, he said that for the exploration and extraction of oil and petroleum, the Centre must recognize the ownership for the indigenous inhabitants of Nagaland and the constitutional protection granted to the people under Article 371A of the Constitution regarding transfer of land and its resources.
In this regard, he said that a mutually agreed, suitable mechanism for payment of royalty and issue of Petroleum Exploration Licence (PELs). “We will continue in our efforts to resolve this matter for the benefit of the people of the state and the country,” he added.
