In a surprising move, multi-platinum-selling artist, Grammy Award winner, and acclaimed lyricist J. Cole, aka Jermaine Lamarr Cole, dropped a surprise project titled ‘Might Delete Later‘ on Friday, April 5, without any prior announcement or fanfare. The 12-song project boasts guest appearances from Young Dro, Gucci Mane, Cam’ron, Central Cee, and more.
Among the dozen tracks on the album, the final song, ‘7 Minute Drill‘, has garnered significant attention from fans on social media.
The release of Might Delete Later comes in response to Cole’s former friend and collaborator, Kendrick Lamar‘s guest verse on ‘Like That‘, from the recent collaborative album ‘We Don’t Trust You‘ by Future and Metro Boomin. In the verse, Lamar took aim at Drake and J. Cole, criticising their inclusion of him as part of the “big three” on their duet ‘First Person Shooter‘, released last year.
While Drake has made subtle references to Lamar’s diss during his current tour, Cole has taken a more direct approach with the surprise release of his new project. On ‘7 Minute Drill‘, Cole responds to the diss, expressing his thoughts and feelings about the situation.
Prior to the release of ‘Might Delete Later‘, Cole had delivered a two-episode of his Might Delete Later vlog series on March 18. In the clip, which is available for viewing online, the Dreamville leader teased new music and provided a glimpse into his touring experience alongside Drake during the ‘It’s All a Blur — Big as the What?‘ tour.
In the second vlog episode, Cole showcased his recent feature releases during a bike ride through an empty city. Towards the end of the episode, a teaser for volume two begins, featuring Cole rapping over Dipset‘s ‘I’m Ready‘, with a new intro from Cam’ron. Cole further teases the complete track by providing fans with a phone number to call at the end of the video for an extended preview.
