Aizawl: Serchhip Police have recovered more than ₹10.7 lakh of the ₹16.01 lakh allegedly siphoned from two bank accounts in separate RTO E-Challan scam cases reported in May 2026.

Serchhip Police Station received several complaints concerning RTO E-Challan scams at the beginning of May, including complaints that ₹13.92 lakh had been withdrawn from the Slice Small Finance Bank account of R. Lalchhandama in Serchhip and ₹2.09 lakh from the MRB account of Robert Zoremmawia.

At the time, the police were in the process of applying for reactivation of their ICJS account and therefore did not have access to the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal (NCRP). As cybercriminals were moving the stolen money quickly, the then Officer-in-Charge of Serchhip Police Station, Inspector R. Lalbiakhlua, took immediate steps to assist the victims and pursued the cases through phone calls and other available means.

According to Serchhip Police, the money taken from Lalchhandama’s account was traced to an account believed to belong to Ram Jeevan Shah at Bank of Maharashtra, Mumbai, as well as two other suspected accounts. The ₹2.09 lakh taken from Robert Zoremmawia’s account was traced to an account at Punjab National Bank, Jhanjharpur, Bihar. The suspected accounts were subsequently frozen.

As a court order is required to recover money from frozen accounts, Serchhip Police submitted three requisitions to the Serchhip District Court. Copies of the requisitions were sent to Bank of Maharashtra and Punjab National Bank in both soft and hard copy and were accepted by the banks’ legal representatives.

Following the court process, ₹9,12,707 out of the ₹13.92 lakh lost from Lalchhandama’s account was recovered in August 2026 from the account believed to belong to Ram Jeevan Shah. Police said the other two suspected accounts linked to the case are still being monitored and investigated.

In Robert Zoremmawia’s case, ₹1,59,627 of the ₹2.09 lakh lost has also been recovered.

Serchhip Police Station has also produced awareness videos on the RTO E-Challan scam and circulated them through social media. Police have registered several cases related to the scam, while some victims have also had their phones compromised as a result of the scam.

Police said the financial losses reported in these cases have not been particularly high because scammers generally target relatively small amounts from victims, although the number of such scams is believed to be increasing.
