AIZAWL: Mizoram joined the global observance of the 12th International Day of Yoga on Saturday with programmes held across the state under the theme “Yoga for Healthy Ageing”, bringing together government officials, security forces, students, NCC cadets and members of the public in a collective celebration of health and well-being.
The state-level programme was held at the 34 Assam Rifles Helipad in Zokhawsang, Aizawl, and was organised by the National AYUSH Mission and Directorate of AYUSH. Mizoram Governor General (Dr) Vijay Kumar Singh, PVSM, AVSM, YSM (Retd), attended as the chief guest, while Health and Family Welfare Minister Lalrinpuii was the guest of honour.
Addressing the gathering, the Governor highlighted the role played by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in bringing yoga to global prominence and noted that the United Nations-recognised International Day of Yoga had now completed 12 years. He described yoga as a holistic practice that promotes physical, mental and intellectual well-being, stressing the importance of following the Common Yoga Protocol to derive maximum benefits.
“Yoga is not meant for sweat; rather, it is intended to bring harmony within the system,” he said, adding that yoga requires no special equipment and can be practised by people from all walks of life.
Health Minister Lalrinpuii said yoga offers peace and balance amid the pressures of modern life and described the observance as Mizoram’s contribution to a global movement promoting health and harmony.
Chief Secretary Khilli Ram Meena reiterated the state government’s commitment to preventive and holistic healthcare through the AYUSH system. The yoga session was led by instructors from the National AYUSH Mission, while participants also viewed the national-level programme from Red Road, Kolkata, virtually and listened to the Prime Minister’s address.
Around 300 participants, including personnel from Assam Rifles, Mizo Air Squadron NCC and government officials, attended the programme.
Beyond the state capital, one of the largest observances was organised by 2 Mizo Battalion NCC, Lunglei, which transformed the occasion into a region-wide outreach programme spanning some of the most remote parts of South Mizoram.
Under the same theme, “Yoga for Healthy Ageing”, nearly 800 NCC cadets participated in synchronised yoga sessions held at C. Thuamluaia Mual in Lunglei, Government Saiha College in Siaha, Don Bosco School in Lawngtlai and the Astro Turf Football Ground in Kamalanagar.
The Lunglei programme featured National Arm Wrestling Silver Medallist Emily C. Rohluzuali, an alumna of 2 Mizo Battalion NCC, whose achievements were highlighted as an example of discipline and perseverance. Mizo singer Feli Hauhnar also attended the event, alongside representatives from 166 Infantry Battalion (TA), 23 Assam Rifles, ECHS Lunglei, 2nd MAP Battalion, the District Sports and Youth Office, ex-servicemen, civil administration and police authorities.
Despite weather-related and logistical challenges, the battalion successfully conducted simultaneous programmes across four locations, extending the observance to areas often considered geographically remote and difficult to access.
Officials said the initiative reflected the battalion’s commitment to ensuring that youth in distant parts of the state could participate in national programmes and developmental activities. The events were organised under the leadership of Colonel Sagar K. Mohanty, Commanding Officer of 2 Mizo Battalion NCC.
International Day of Yoga was also observed at district hospitals, Health and Wellness Centres, educational institutions and community organisations across Mizoram. This year’s theme, “Yoga for Healthy Ageing”, emphasises the role of yoga in promoting physical fitness, mental well-being and healthy ageing throughout life.
The statewide observance underscored yoga’s growing popularity in Mizoram and highlighted efforts by government agencies, educational institutions and youth organisations to promote healthier lifestyles and community well-being.
