Aizawl: Ebenezer Hospital has successfully performed Mizoram’s first-ever transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI), marking a milestone in the state’s cardiac care services.

The groundbreaking procedure was carried out on June 21 at the hospital’s Cardiology Center, where doctors replaced a patient’s aortic valve without the need for conventional open-heart surgery. Instead, the new heart valve was implanted through an artery using a minimally invasive catheter-based technique.

TAVI is regarded as one of the most advanced treatments for severe aortic valve disease, particularly for patients who are considered high-risk candidates for open-heart surgery. The procedure reduces surgical trauma, shortens recovery time, and has become an increasingly important option in modern cardiovascular medicine.

According to the hospital, only a limited number of medical centers in Northeast India currently have the expertise and facilities to perform the procedure.

The operation was led by Dr. Vanlalmalsawmdawngliana and the cardiology team at Ebenezer Hospital under the guidance of Dr. Dilip Kumar, Cardiologist at Manipal Hospital. The medical team reported that the procedure was completed successfully.

The successful introduction of TAVI at Ebenezer Hospital is expected to improve access to advanced cardiac treatment within Mizoram, reducing the need for patients to travel outside the state for specialized heart valve replacement procedures.
