Aizawl: Mizoram Governor General (Dr) Vijay Kumar Singh, PVSM, AVSM, YSM (Retd), on Wednesday highlighted both the successes and the serious challenges facing Mizoram’s healthcare system while launching two national health campaigns in Aizawl, Swasth Nari, Sashakt Parivar Abhiyan (Healthy Woman, Empowered Family) and the 8th Rashtriya Poshan Maah (National Nutrition Month).

According to the Governor, Mizoram has achieved one of the lowest Infant Mortality Rates (IMR) in India, 13 deaths per 1,000 live births, a remarkable achievement credited to improved maternal and child health services, including medical colleges, district hospitals, and hundreds of primary and community health centres.

However, this progress is now threatened by a surge in other public health concerns. The Governor warned that HIV/AIDS, drug abuse, and malaria continue to affect large sections of the population, while cancer and respiratory diseases linked to tobacco use are rising at an alarming pace. “These are challenges that require collective effort from every section of society,” he said, urging effective implementation of existing government schemes.

Health Minister Lalrinpuii, who also attended the event, reinforced the message, stressing that women’s health is at the core of family and community well-being. She urged healthcare workers, NGOs, churches and village councils to actively support the campaigns so that their impact reaches every household.

The campaign, which runs from September 17 to October 2, will include health camps, check-ups, screenings for diseases like diabetes, breast cancer and tuberculosis, and enrollment in government schemes such as PM-JAY and PMMVY.

While the Governor praised Mizoram’s healthcare strides, his remarks underscored the paradox: a state that has succeeded in keeping infant mortality among the lowest in India is simultaneously battling some of the country’s most complex health crises.
