Aizawl: Hundreds of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers and members of the general public joined a massive protest rally in Kamalanagar, headquarters of the Chakma Autonomous District Council (CADC), voicing anger against soaring electricity bills and the deteriorating condition of roads in the region.
The rally, organised by the BJP CADC, highlighted the alleged failures of the Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM)-led Mizoram government, which protesters accused of pursuing “anti-people policies.” Demonstrators carried placards and shouted slogans demanding immediate redressal of grievances.
Addressing the gathering at Kamalanagar-I, BJP CADC District President Durjya Dhan Chakma sharply criticised the ruling government. He said that instead of fulfilling its promise of being a “Mipui Sorkar” (People’s Government), the ZPM regime had “burdened the poor” with abnormally high electricity bills, reportedly ranging from ₹526 to as much as ₹47,404. He also alleged that the price of ration items had been doubled from ₹15 to ₹30, worsening economic hardship for ordinary families.
Chakma pointed out that the poor road conditions, particularly within Kamalanagar town and on the only lifeline road from Lungrang South to Chawngte, had further pushed up the prices of essential commodities. “The government’s negligence has caused untold suffering to the people,” he said, demanding urgent action.
State BJP Vice President and former CADC Chief Executive Member, Molin Kumar Chakma, also addressed the crowd in front of the CADC Secretariat. He accused ZPM leaders of “failing miserably” and prioritising personal indulgences over public service. “Instead of addressing the hardships of the people, they are busy transferring SSA teachers and posting pictures of themselves in restaurants or smoking expensive cigarettes on social media. This shows their insensitivity and arrogance,” he alleged.
He further demanded that the Governor of Mizoram dissolve the 11th CADC and call for fresh elections to allow citizens to choose leaders “who truly care for public welfare.”
District Vice President Doyal Chandra Dewan also spoke, condemning what he termed the “anti-people activities” of the ZPM government. He concluded the rally with a vote of thanks to participants for their strong support.
Following the protest, BJP CADC leaders submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister of Mizoram through the SDO (Civil), Chawngte, urging immediate government intervention to address both the abnormal hike in electricity bills and the long-neglected road issues affecting Kamalanagar and its surrounding areas.
