Aizawl: The Central Young Mizo Association (CYMA) has extended financial aid of Rs 6 lakh to support refugees from Myanmar who have fled to Mizoram following fresh violence in the Chin Hills region. The aid is meant to assist those displaced by recent clashes between two anti-junta armed groups across the border.
According to a PTI report, thousands of refugees have been entering Mizoram since July 2, when fighting erupted between the Chin National Defence Force (CNDF) and the Chinland Defence Force–Hualngoram (CDF-H) over control of strategic areas in northwestern Myanmar’s Chin State. A senior Indian security official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said that around 4,000 people have crossed into Mizoram since the conflict began.
In response, the Central YMA has disbursed Rs 3 lakh to the Zokhawthar Branch YMA, Rs 2 lakh to the Vaphai Branch YMA, and Rs 1 lakh to the Sub-Headquarters YMA in Champhai. The contributions were formally handed over to the Sub-Hqrs YMA, Champhai, which is actively engaged in coordinating relief efforts for the incoming refugees.
The Chin refugees, many of whom share close ethnic, cultural, and linguistic ties with the Mizos, have found temporary shelter in border villages. Local organisations, churches, and community groups have continued to provide humanitarian support despite limited external assistance.
The ongoing unrest in Myanmar’s Chin State has led to multiple waves of displacement into Mizoram since the military coup in 2021, making local solidarity and civil society efforts all the more crucial.
