Aizawl: Dr. K. Beichhua has been appointed as the new President of the Mizoram unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), making history as the first sitting MLA to hold the position in the state. The announcement was made today by Vanathi Srinivasan, National Returning Officer for Mizoram from the Central BJP leadership, during a formal declaration at the Mizoram BJP office.

The internal party elections were held yesterday, in which Dr. Beichhua was elected unopposed. He will serve as the party’s state president until 2027.

Dr. Beichhua, a retired surgeon and seasoned politician, was elected as the MLA from Siaha constituency in the 2023 Mizoram Legislative Assembly elections. Formerly a member of the Mizo National Front (MNF), he served as the Minister of State for Social Welfare, Excise & Narcotics, and Sericulture in the Government of Mizoram before resigning and joining the BJP ahead of the 2023 polls.

His elevation to the state presidency is seen as a strategic move by the BJP, as the party looks to expand its influence in the northeastern state. His political experience and legislative presence are expected to strengthen the party’s organisational structure and electoral base in the run-up to future elections.
