Aizawl: Two journalists from Mizoram, HC Vanlalruata and Isaac Zoramsanga, have achieved a historic milestone, becoming the first from the state to be part of a team that won an international Emmy Award for a documentary.

The short-form documentary titled “Myanmar’s Civil War” won in the category Outstanding Continuing News Coverage – Short Form at the 46th Annual News & Documentary Emmy Awards, presented by the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS).

Vanlalruata and Zoramsanga served as field producers on the project for the BBC, contributing essential ground-level support during a ten-day reporting mission in Chin State, western Myanmar. Their work helped the team gain rare access to conflict zones where ethnic resistance groups have pushed back Myanmar’s military junta and continue to fight for territorial control.

The 6.5-minute documentary sheds light on how local rebel groups have pushed the military out of several areas, while also revealing disturbing reports of torture, abduction, and killings used by the junta to suppress resistance movements and prevent youth from joining the armed struggle.

Speaking to EastMojo, Isaac Zoramsanga said, “We are really happy, it is hard to express it in words. We travelled for 10 days with the BBC team and put in all our efforts for this documentary focusing on the impact of the civil war.”

HC Vanlalruata also shared his emotions, saying, “From my side, it is completely unexpected even after one of our BBC team members, Aakhriti Thapar, informed me in March that the news coverage was nominated for the Emmys. It is something beyond my dreams. We are very happy to be part of the great team.”
