Aizawl: Chief Minister Lalduhoma inaugurated the Mizoram Water Informatics Centre (MWIC) at the Irrigation & Water Resources Department (IWRD) auditorium, MINECO, in a ceremony attended by state officials and water management experts.
During the event, the Chief Minister highlighted the importance of having a centralised hub for water data, explaining, “With over 82 locations providing diverse water data, this centre will be vital for scientific planning and sustainable development in Mizoram. It will serve as a trusted resource for departments and institutions requiring accurate water-related information.” He added that through the centre, data sharing and usage would be streamlined, improving efficiency and enabling better decision-making.
The MWIC is established under the National Hydrology Project and the National Water Informatics Centre, with support from the World Bank. The Chief Minister emphasised that the centre aligns with the government’s commitment to modernise water management and infrastructure development in the state.
Speaking about the government’s water resource initiatives, Chief Minister Lalduhoma outlined ongoing projects, including the Mat Multipurpose Dam and Vapar Multipurpose Dam, aimed at improving irrigation and power generation. He stressed the urgent need to address water scarcity, particularly during dry seasons, stating, “We have faced difficulties pumping water to meet demands, and this centre will help monitor and manage water resources more effectively.”
The Chief Minister also announced the launch of the Tlawng Lui Early Warning System, developed to provide timely alerts during floods, which will be managed by the Disaster Management & Rehabilitation department.
IWRD Minister PC Vanlalruata praised the establishment of the centre, describing it as a significant step towards sustainable water management for Mizoram. He added, “This initiative will transform how we monitor water resources and plan for future challenges such as droughts and floods.”
Er. Lalrothanga, Secretary of IWRD, called the centre not just a source of information but a centre of transformation for Mizoram’s water sector. He stressed the importance of utilising accurate data to inform policy and practical water management solutions.
K. Hamlet, SE (P&M) and Director of Mizoram State Water Informatics Centre (Mz-SWIC), elaborated on the centre’s technical functions. “The centre will collect extensive data on river flows, rainfall, groundwater levels, and water quality from 82 monitoring stations across Mizoram. This data will be essential for managing water resources, early warning systems, and long-term planning.”
The MWIC also supports the Mizoram Water Resources Information System and the Tuilian Warning System, enhancing the state’s capacity to respond proactively to water-related disasters.
The launch of the Mizoram Water Informatics Centre marks a milestone in the state’s efforts to improve water governance and build resilience against climate-related challenges.
