Aizawl: The Mizoram government has issued a public advisory warning of water shortages across multiple districts following extensive damage to water pipelines and pumping systems caused by continuous heavy rainfall and landslides.
The Public Health Engineering (PHE) Department across various districts has released official notices urging residents to use water sparingly and harvest rainwater wherever possible.
In Kolasib District, the PHE Department reported that gravity pipelines and monoblock systems across five towns had been severely damaged, leading to major disruptions in water supply. Residents were advised to exercise caution in their water usage and to make the most of available rainwater resources.
In Khawzawl District, the PHE Department said the Tuivawl River—one of the primary water sources—had become heavily polluted, rendering the treatment plant ineffective in purifying the water. The department also reported damage to gravity pipelines and requested the public to use water with restraint.
Hnahthial District issued an advisory on June 3, stating that flooding in the Tuichang River had damaged both the raw water pump and the control panel, resulting in power disruptions and the inability to pump water. The notice appealed for public understanding and cooperation during the ongoing crisis.
Similar warnings were issued in Mamit and Siaha districts, where authorities cited both mechanical damage and flooding-related issues as the cause of supply disruptions.
In Aizawl, the state capital, the advisory highlighted that due to flooding and water pollution, the Greater Aizawl Water Supply Scheme (GAWSS) Phases I and II had been unable to pump water from May 30 (Friday) to June 3. The notice also stated that GAWSS Phase III at Setlak had been out of operation since May 26 (Monday) due to damage sustained by a power transformer.
Officials from the PHE Department have called for public cooperation as repair work continues across the affected areas. With continued rainfall expected, authorities have emphasised the importance of water conservation and urged residents to stay informed through official updates.
