Aizawl: Heavy rainfall triggered the collapse of six buildings and one Assam-type house in the Chandmary and Bazar areas of Lawngtlai at around 10:45 PM on May 30. A swift evacuation operation was launched under the supervision of Lawngtlai Deputy Commissioner Cheemala Siva Gopal Reddy, IAS, in coordination with the Central Young Lai Association (CYLA).
Personnel from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) 3rd IR Battalion, Thingkah, Mizoram Police, Assam Rifles, the Quick Response Team from the District Disaster Management & Rehabilitation Department, and CYLA volunteers spearheaded the rescue.
Three individuals were trapped under the debris. Two were successfully rescued on the morning of May 31, and the third was safely evacuated around 7:50 PM. All were taken to the District Civil Hospital, Lawngtlai, for treatment.
The collapse has also blocked National Highway NH-2, and debris clearance operations are underway. The District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), led by Deputy Commissioner Cheemala Siva Gopal Reddy, continues to monitor the situation closely.
With the weather department forecasting more rainfall over the next seven days, the District Emergency Operation Center (DEOC) has been activated. Quick Response Teams from the Disaster Management & Rehabilitation Department and SDRF remain on standby for any emergency response.
