Aizawl: As heavy rainfall lashed Mizoram on Friday, landslides were reported across Aizawl city and its surrounding areas, leading to multiple disruptions and a tragic loss of life. In a fatal incident in Thuampui locality, a retaining wall collapsed, killing one person and injuring another.

The deceased has been identified as Lalnunmawia (37), a resident of Chawlhhmun locality. The injured, Lalfakzuala (35) from Ramthar Veng, was rescued and rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment.

The incident occurred as the state reels under the impact of continuous downpour, prompting concerns about infrastructure safety in the hilly terrain of Mizoram.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Mizoram, forecasting extremely heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds. In response, the state government has announced the closure of all schools as a precautionary measure to safeguard students and staff.

A formal notification issued by the School Education Department on Wednesday stated that the decision was taken in consultation with the Disaster Management and Rehabilitation Department, following warnings from the IMD’s Regional Meteorological Centre in Guwahati and the Meteorological Centre in Aizawl.

Authorities have urged residents to remain alert and take necessary precautions. The State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC) and district-level emergency centres are on high alert. Citizens are encouraged to contact emergency helplines: 1077, 1070, 0389-2342520, or the universal number 112 in case of any emergencies.

The Disaster Management and Rehabilitation Department has also advised the public to stay indoors during adverse weather conditions and promptly report any incidents. With Mizoram’s topography prone to landslides during heavy rain, the state continues to prepare for possible disaster scenarios.
