Aizawl: Two individuals from Aibawk, Aizawl district, were booked under the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972, for shooting a Kalij Pheasant and a Masked Palm Civet.
The accused, identified as Vanlalhriata (35), son of Malsawma, from Aibawk Venghlun, and HP Rodingliana, son of HP Rothuama, from Aibawk Salem Veng, were apprehended by the forest range staff of the Environment, Forest & Climate Change (EF&CC) Department in coordination with the Sateek Branch of the Young Mizo Association (YMA).
The incident came to light on October 10, 2024, when the EF&CC’s Aibawk Forest Range received a report from the Sateek Branch YMA that the endangered animals had been shot. Following the report, the suspects were taken into custody and brought before the Chief Judicial Magistrate the next day. Both individuals have been remanded to the Central Jail.
The two men were booked under sections 9, 39(3)(a), and 51 of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972, for killing the protected species. According to Schedule-I of the Act, they face potential imprisonment of 3 to 7 years, a fine of ₹25,000, or both.
