Lawngtlai: The Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) in Chawnhu, Lawngtlai, successfully conducted a ‘Cluster Frontline Demonstration (CFLD) on Groundnut (Girnar-4 variety)’ at the agricultural land of farmer Lalnunzira. This event marked the harvest of biofortified groundnut, which District Commissioner Cheemala Siva Gopal Reddy, IAS, stated could play a significant role in combating anemia, a condition prevalent in the region.
The District Commissioner officiated the harvest event and commended KVK’s efforts to support local farmers. He emphasised the importance of such initiatives in improving both agricultural practices and public health. “KVK’s efforts are essential not only for Lawngtlai but also for Mizoram as a whole, where reliance on state imports is significant,” he said. The Commissioner highlighted the need for self-sufficiency and underlined the potential of biofortified crops like Girnar-4 groundnut in addressing nutritional deficiencies.
Lawngtlai district experiences a high prevalence of iron deficiency (anemia), and Siva Gopal Reddy emphasized the critical role that a balanced, nutrient-rich diet, including groundnuts, can play in combating this condition. He also noted that the organic farming of such crops could offer higher market value while supporting sustainable agriculture.
The biofortified Girnar-4 groundnut variety was developed by ICAR – Directorate of Groundnut Research in 2020 and is known for its high oil content and rich nutritional profile, making it particularly beneficial for human health. It matures within 110-115 days and promises better yield and quality.
Dr. C. Lalfakawma, Senior Scientist and Head of KVK Lawngtlai, along with other KVK staff, played a pivotal role in organizing the demonstration. They underscored the importance of promoting organic cultivation and raising awareness about the benefits of biofortified crops. They also stressed the need for ongoing collaboration between farmers and agricultural experts to improve local livelihoods and public health outcomes.
