Aizawl: The impending strike by commercial vehicles in Mizoram, set to begin on October 14, 2024, has raised concerns among local farmers, who are already grappling with high fuel prices and poor road conditions.
The Mizoram Commercial Vehicle Union announced the strike following a series of unsuccessful meetings with government officials regarding rising fuel costs, which have severely impacted transportation and trade in the region.
Union officials expressed their dismay after meeting with Chief Minister Lalduhoma on September 16 and September 24, as well as the Taxation Minister on September 17. Despite these discussions, the government decided to maintain the current fuel rates, leaving the union with no choice but to proceed with the strike. “When fuel prices increased, it severely impacted all commercial vehicles, and we considered raising our service rates,” the officials stated. However, they recognized that such an increase would further burden local laborers and farmers, who rely heavily on affordable transportation.
The strike holds particular significance for farmers and vegetable vendors in Mizoram. They depend on commercial vehicles for the transportation of their produce to markets. “It’s not just us; especially the vegetable vendors and farmers are suffering,” union officials emphasized. With petrol prices in Mizoram currently at ₹99.21 per liter—among the highest in the Northeast—the economic strain is palpable.
Moreover, local farmers are already dealing with challenges posed by deteriorating road conditions, which lead to vehicle damage and increased maintenance costs. As the commercial vehicles prepare to strike, the potential disruption in transportation could severely hinder the movement of goods, affecting the availability of fresh produce in local markets and exacerbating the financial struggles of farmers.
According to the latest figures reported by NDTV, petrol prices in neighboring states are lower, with Meghalaya at ₹94.92 per liter, Nagaland at ₹96.61 per liter, and Assam at ₹97.44 per liter.
The union has declared that it will not back down until the government takes action to address their demands for reduced fuel prices. With designated duty personnel in each district, the strike is poised to have a significant impact on daily transportation and the local economy.
