Aizawl: On Wednesday, Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma launched the “Campaign for India Fight Against HIV & STI” at the Vaivakawn YMA Hall. The intensified IEC (Information, Education, and Communication) campaign will continue for two months, aiming to raise awareness and encourage preventive measures against HIV and sexually transmitted infections in the state.
In his speech, Chief Minister Lalduhoma emphasised that both HIV and STIs are significantly influenced by lifestyle choices. He stated that while HIV can sometimes be transmitted due to unfortunate circumstances, such cases are rare. According to him, about 60% of HIV cases in Mizoram are due to the lack of condom use, while 30% are linked to drug use.
The Chief Minister revealed that there are currently 16,217 HIV patients receiving treatment through the Mizoram State AIDS Control Society (MSACS). However, he expressed concern about 633 patients who are untraceable and urged them to approach the nearest ART (Antiretroviral Therapy) Centre for assistance. He also stressed the importance of early detection, urging individuals who suspect they might be infected to get tested as soon as possible.
Lalduhoma highlighted the state’s commitment to fighting HIV, including financing a baseline survey. He spoke about the importance of treatment, noting that if an HIV-positive mother receives proper medical care, her child can be born HIV-free. He also mentioned that the National AIDS Control Organisation (NACO) reported Mizoram’s HIV prevalence rate at 2.73%.
He called for a collective effort in the fight against HIV and STIs, urging the church, NGOs, associations, and all individuals to work together.
Health Minister Lalrinpuii also spoke at the event, emphasizing the severity of the drug problem in Mizoram. She noted that middle school students have been found using injections, highlighting the urgent need for awareness and preventive measures. She expressed the government’s commitment to addressing these issues through various campaigns at both the village and community levels.
