Aizawl: As part of the 78th Independence Day celebration and to strengthen the fight against drug abuse, the Excise & Narcotics Department organized the Ruihhlo Do Kawngzawhpui(Walk Against Drugs ) Walkathon on the morning of August 14, 2024.
The event, held under the theme “Together we can create a safer, healthier, and drug-free community”, aimed to raise awareness about the dangers of drug abuse and promote a drug-free society.
In his address to the participants, Excise & Narcotics Minister Lalnghinglova Hmar stated, “Throughout India’s journey to independence, many sacrifices were made, particularly by young men who did not waver in their commitment. Today, just as we secured independence for our nation, we must fight for a Mizoram free from drugs. The impact of drugs may not be immediately visible, but if we continue our fight without giving up, I believe Mizoram will one day be completely free from this scourge. To the students, even though many of your peers may be tempted by drugs, I urge you to stand firm and continue this fight for a brighter future.”
The event’s keynote speaker, Lalramsanga Sailo, I.R.S, Secretary to the Government of Mizoram, emphasized the role of students in leading the charge against drug abuse. “Those who participated today have the potential to become key figures in their communities to prevent substance abuse. I encourage you all to be ambassadors in the war against drugs,” he said, calling for a united effort.
The walkathon was led by Z. Lalhmangaiha, Commissioner of Excise & Narcotics, with Peter Zohmingthanga, Joint Commissioner of Excise & Narcotics, administering a pledge to participants to remain vigilant in the fight against drug abuse.

Approximately 250 students from various schools participated in the event, alongside members of the Central YMA, the Central YMA Kumpuan Committee, government officials, and dedicated anti-drug advocates. Over 400 people in total took part in the walkathon, all walking together to symbolize their commitment to creating a drug-free Mizoram.
