Aizawl: At a political session held on July 5, 2024, at the Congress Bhavan, MPCC President Lalthanzara criticised the Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) for failing to meet its electoral promises.

Lalthanzara highlighted several unfulfilled commitments made by the ZPM, which, he claimed, have led to widespread dissatisfaction among the public.

In his address, Lalthanzara stated, “The ZPM spoke of many things it would not do if it came to power, such as ensuring contractors would take up work without restricted tenders, eradicating the VIP culture, and eliminating the illegal smuggling of areca nuts. However, the reality is starkly different. We see from the newspapers that over 9,000 bags of areca nuts were seized in the Vairengte area while 5,000 bags were illegally hidden. It is suspicious to think this could have been done without the knowledge of the state leaders.”

He further accused the ZPM government of failing to implement austerity measures. “They promised austerity but instead increased MLA funds, raised the salaries of Board Chairmen and councillors, and expanded the number of advisors. It appears they are using public money to take care of themselves,” Lalthanzara added.

The MPCC President also criticised the Chief Minister for allegedly spreading falsehoods during the Remna Ni celebration, where the Chief Minister claimed to have defected from the MP for the sake of peace and harmony in the state. Lalthanzara questioned, “What will the intelligent people in their party think of this lie?”

Lalthanzara also expressed concern over the ZPM government’s handling of refugees from Bangladesh and their failure to address the issue with the BSF. “The government has many learned people as advisors and consultants, yet they are still not able to follow the right path. It raises suspicions whether they have received any benefit from the BJP,” he said.

Lalthanzara warned that people are slowly losing hope in a government that had once urged the public to test and see their capabilities.
