Aizawl: In line with pre-election promises, Chief Minister Lalduhoma announced that the Mizoram government will prioritize the sale and processing of ginger. During a meeting held on Monday with concerned ministers and officials, the Chief Minister outlined plans to support ginger and other key crops as part of the government’s flagship program.
Lalduhoma affirmed the government’s commitment to purchasing four crop types, stating that these will begin to be harvested six months from now. He advised officials to make all necessary preparations to facilitate this timeline. Additionally, he emphasized the need for major initiatives to resolve issues faced by areca nut farmers in the state.
Looking ahead, Chief Minister Lalduhoma projected that Mizoram will see a harvest of 1 million quintals of ginger in the coming year. He highlighted the plan to leverage the free market for ginger sales while also discussing measures to support farmers. To this end, the government is considering implementing a Minimum Support Price (MSP) for ginger sales from January to May to ensure stable income for farmers.
The meeting also addressed concerns about the potential difficulty farmers might face in selling lower-grade ginger. It was decided that the government would collaborate with private companies to manage such situations, ensuring that all ginger, regardless of quality, can find a market.
