Aizawl: In a stark revelation, Mizoram activist Vanramchhuangi, also known as Ruatfela Nu, has sounded the alarm over the perilous state of Aizawl’s solitary water source, potentially tainted by sewage and excrement.
Ruatfela Nu on Monday lodged a formal complaint with the Aizawl Municipal Corporation (AMC) regarding the purported contamination of the capital city’s water source and made a fervent appeal for call to action.
Ruatfela Nu submitted the complaint on Monday, outlining various grievances and proposing measures to ensure proper waste management in compliance with AMC regulations. Expressing dissatisfaction with the current situation, she criticized the authorities for allowing polluted wastewater to infiltrate residential areas.
“To allow polluted wastewater to infiltrate our residential areas, visible to the naked eye and neglected by the AMC, demonstrates a lack of respect for taxpayers by the municipal corporation,” Ruatfela Nu remarked, emphasizing the AMC’s responsibility to uphold cleanliness standards in the city.
She warned of escalating the matter to higher authorities if the issue remains unresolved within two weeks, threatening to approach the National Green Tribunal (NGT) and the National Pollution Control Board (NPCB) for intervention.
Highlighting broader concerns about public health, Ruatfela Nu attributed the community’s health challenges not only to individual negligence but also to governmental shortcomings. She raised questions about potential water pollution due to lax waste management regulations enforced by the government.
The complaint letter addressed multiple issues, including the discharge of excrement waste into the Tuikual River by individuals, which ultimately flows into the Tlawng River, Aizawl’s main water source. Ruatfela Nu warned of legal action, including filing a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) in the Gauhati High Court Aizawl Bench, if immediate measures are not taken to rectify the situation.

Furthermore, Ruatfela Nu detailed instances of environmental disruption caused by leaks from the composite of the BSF Headquarters in Durtlang, resulting in foul odors and affecting nearby residents. Additionally, she cited incidents of water spillage from the Assam Rifles’ kitchen wastewater, further exacerbating the environmental concerns in the area.
EastMojo attempted to contact the AMC authorities for their input, but received no response.
