Guwahati: Days ahead of the Lok Sabha elections senior Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) leader Rana Goswami resigned from the party on February 28.
Tendering his resignation to General Secretary (Organisational) KC Venugopal, Goswami wrote, “I beg to state that I am tendering my resignation as the working President of Assam Pradesh Congress Committee and as an active member of the Indian National Congress.”
The move comes amid speculations of Goswami joining the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Earlier on February 27, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Cabinet Minister Pijush Hazarika said that the BJP would be happy to welcome Goswami if the Congress leader wishes to join the party.

“I will be glad if he joins the BJP. We served together when we were in Congress and he is a promising leader. It is likely, he is not happy in Congress and because of the kind of dominance Rakibul Hussain and Wazed Ali Choudhury have even Bhupen Borah will perish someday. So instead of experiencing hardship in Congress, if Rana Goswami joins BJP, I would welcome the move,” Haarika said.
On February 25, Rana Goswami stepped down from his position as the organisational in-charge of Upper Assam, citing political reasons. It was speculated that the reason behind the move was attributed to various political considerations.
