Aizawl: At least 362 pigs have been killed so far in a fresh outbreak of African Swine Fever (ASF) since December last year, an official said on Wednesday.
He said that the highly contagious pig disease reported for the first time in the state in March last year was considered more or less contained initially, as no pig deaths were reported due to the outbreak since December.
However, after a short break, pig deaths were reported in east Mizoram’s Champhai district bordering Myanmar in February. These deaths were confirmed as African Swine Fever (ASF) in March, the official said.
At least 22 villages in 5 districts are currently affected by ASF, he said.
The official also said that 18 pigs have been culled so far after December to prevent the further spread of the disease. As many as 33,417 pigs have died due to the outbreak of ASF last year, causing monetary losses of up to Rs 60.82 crore.
A total of 10,910 pigs have also been culled to prevent the further spread of ASF last year.
