Shillong: In a major enforcement drive aimed at reducing road accidents and promoting safer roads, the Shillong Traffic Police (STP), along with the Special Operation Team (SOT) and members of the Laitumkhrah Dorbar, booked 80 traffic violators during a synchronised multi-point weekend NAKA checking operation conducted across Shillong on the night of June 26.
The operation was carried out under Operation Safer Shillong, an initiative focused on achieving the goal of zero road fatalities in the city.
According to the police, the drive targeted drunken driving, illegal vehicle modifications and other traffic violations that pose a risk to public safety. A total fine of ₹81,500 was realised during the enforcement exercise.
Police said motorists found driving under the influence of alcohol were not permitted to continue their journey. Instead, they were released only after a responsible person arrived to escort them home, ensuring the safety of both the drivers and other road users.
