Meghalaya: Concerns grow over cleanliness, management at Laitlum Grand Canyon

Shillong: Meghalaya’s Laitlum Grand Canyon, known for its pristine beauty and tranquillity, is now drawing criticism from visitors who say the popular tourist destination is gradually losing its charm due to poor management and growing disturbances.

Tourists have raised concerns over the increasing presence of pony rides at the site, which they say are poorly managed. Animal waste was seen scattered across parts of the area, creating an unpleasant stench and affecting the overall visitor experience.

A tourist from Maharashtra said he had visited Laitlum about five years ago and remembered it as a peaceful location where visitors could enjoy nature. He said the site now feels crowded and noisy, adding that recent construction activities have altered the landscape and disrupted the natural view.

Two female tourists from Delhi also expressed disappointment over the condition of the site. They said that despite the presence of dustbins, plastic waste and animal droppings were visible in several areas. They further criticised the use of loud music, calling it unnecessary in a place known for its serenity.

“The canyon is beautiful, but seeing plastic waste strewn around is disappointing, and this can deteriorate very quickly, which would be very sad. I wonder if having horses for joy rides is the only thing that can be offered to tourists in 2026. I believe much more can be offered, nature alone, without distractions like loud music and pony rides,” said M Sen from Delhi.

Another tourist, Sonakshi from Delhi, said that if pony rides are allowed at the site, proper rules should be put in place to ensure cleanliness is maintained.

When contacted, an official associated with the management of the site, who declined to be recorded, said pony operators have been instructed to clean up animal waste but admitted that compliance has been inconsistent.

The official further stated that formal guidelines have not yet been implemented due to ongoing construction work. He added that once the development is complete, ponies and horses will not be allowed inside the Sipro Park area at Laitlum Canyon.
