Two people have reportedly died following a suspected dynamite explosion at an illegal coal mine in Thangsko village. The incident, which came to light through delayed reports, is said to have occurred on December 23 and reportedly left several others injured.
According to sources, one of the deceased, believed to be a Bangladeshi national, died on the day of the incident. Another victim, identified as Ashok Tamang, succumbed to his injuries on January 1 while undergoing treatment at Shillong Civil Hospital, where he had been admitted to the surgical ward.

Officials have not yet confirmed full details of the incident. However, local sources have alleged that the area, described as ‘sorkari‘ land, is used for illegal coal extraction by multiple claimants, who reportedly employ Bangladeshi labourers. It is also feared that some of the injured, believed to be foreign nationals, may have been sent back across the border to avoid detection.
Videos purportedly from the site show that several of the injured sustained severe burn injuries to the face, back and neck.
Authorities have yet to issue an official statement, and investigations into the incident are ongoing.
