The victim was discovered lying in a pool of blood, with a notebook still clutched in her hand. She bore severe head injuries, suspected to have been inflicted with a heavy object. Police registered a case of murder and suspected sexual assault, confirming foul play.
On Thursday afternoon, around 1:30 pm, officers from Mawlasnai Police Outpost, accompanied by family members, shifted the body to Nongpoh Civil Hospital for post-mortem examination.
The gruesome killing has sparked widespread outrage and condemnation across Ri-Bhoi district and beyond. Local organisations, women’s rights groups, and community leaders have called for a fast-track trial and stringent punishment for the accused.
Ri-Bhoi Superintendent of Police said that the prompt arrest was made possible through coordinated efforts by the police and local residents. “This case has deeply disturbed the community. We are committed to ensuring justice for the victim and her family,” the SP said.
The incident comes just a day after another tragic case in Shillong, where a seven-year-old boy was found murdered, further intensifying public concern over the safety of children in Meghalaya.
Police have urged citizens to remain alert and cooperate with law enforcement authorities as the investigation continues.
