Shillong: Just a day after the shocking murder of a 7-year-old boy in Shillong, another tragic case has shaken Meghalaya. A 13-year-old girl was found brutally killed on Wednesday evening in Kalapangti village under Khyndewso area, which falls under the Mawlasnai Police Outpost in Ri-Bhoi district.

According to reports, the girl had not returned home after school. When she failed to reach home by around 7 pm, her worried family members informed the village authorities, who immediately began a search.

Tragically, within a short time, the search team found her body in a nearby forest. The victim was lying in a pool of blood, with bleeding visible from her nose and a notebook still clutched in her hand. She also had a head injury, suspected to have been caused by a heavy object.

Police believe the girl was murdered and are treating the case as a matter of foul play. On Thursday afternoon, around 1:30 pm, Mawlasnai police, along with family members, shifted the body to Nongpoh Civil Hospital for a post-mortem examination. An investigation has been launched to track down the culprits.

Meanwhile, Agatha Sangma, Chairperson of the Meghalaya State Commission for Protection of Child Rights, expressed deep sorrow over the deaths of both the girl in Ri-Bhoi and the 7-year-old boy from Nongrah, East Khasi Hills.

She conveyed condolences to the grieving families and said the Commission stands with them in this painful time.

Raising concerns over the increasing cases of missing children in Meghalaya, the Commission stated that it has already submitted a Model Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) to the government for immediate implementation, to ensure quicker action in such situations.

The Commission has urged the police to carry out a thorough and time-bound investigation so that those responsible for the crimes are caught and punished.

It further assured that it will continue working with the police, government departments, and other stakeholders to protect the safety and rights of children across the state.
