Shillong: A delegation from the Shiromani Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee (SGPC) has expressed its intent to assist the Meghalaya government in finding an agreeable solution regarding the proposed relocation of 342 families from Them Iew Mawlong.
The SGPC members, accompanied by representatives of the Harijan Panchayat Committee (HPC), attended a meeting convened by Chief Secretary Donald Philips Wahlang at the Main Secretariat on Wednesday to discuss the relocation issue.
Jagmohan Singh, convener of Save Shillong Sikhs (SSS), who accompanied the SGPC delegation, emphasised that their presence was not to cause disruption but to help the government resolve the matter peacefully.
He highlighted that the issue affects the Sikh community, many of whom migrated to Shillong from Punjab over 200 years ago. The leader said that it pains them to see their community in distress.

Responding to questions, he acknowledged that the government’s proposal is not entirely satisfactory, but the concerns raised are under active discussion. He expressed confidence in finding a mutually agreeable solution.
Earlier, Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar had stated that a meeting convened by the Chief Secretary would take place by the end of the month to finalise the decision on the relocation of the 342 families residing in Them Iew Mawlong.
