Dr. Mukul Sangma appointed leader of opposition in Meghalaya assembly

Shillong: Dr. Mukul Sangma, a leader from the Trinamool Congress (TMC), has been officially appointed as the new Leader of Opposition in the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly on Thursday. Speaker Thomas Sangma also announced that lone Congress MLA Ronnie V. Lyngdoh has been appointed as the new Opposition Chief Whip.

This marks the second time Dr. Sangma has been entrusted with leading the opposition camp in the House. He previously served as the Leader of Opposition from November 2021 to 2023.

It is worth noting that both the Trinamool Congress and the Congress hold a strength of 10 percent in the 60-member Assembly, which qualifies them for the two positions. The Trinamool Congress currently has five MLAs in the Assembly, while the Congress has one.

Meanwhile, the four-member Voice of the People Party (VPP), which also sits in the opposition, has chosen to remain separate. However, the party has reiterated its commitment to working with the Trinamool Congress and Congress on issues of public importance.
