Tura: In a major crackdown on illegal sawmill operators, the GHADC Forest Department recently shut down two illegal saw mills under the Phulbari range in West Garo Hills, seizing equipment used for unlawful activities.
The raids, led by the Phulbari Range Forest Officer, took place on August 16 in Masangpani and Nimaikata villages, resulting in the confiscation of a significant quantity of illegal materials. The operation followed continuous surveillance and community reports of environmental damage caused by illegal logging.
“These sawmills were operating without proper licenses, contributing to deforestation and the unauthorized exploitation of timber resources. We are committed to protecting our forests and will not tolerate illegal activities that endanger our natural heritage,” the Range Forest Officer stated.
The operation is part of the department’s ongoing efforts to combat deforestation and promote sustainable forest management. “The seized materials will be used as evidence in ongoing investigations, and further legal action will be taken against those responsible,” the officer added.
In the raids, over 100 cubic feet (CFT) of non-Sal wood, including species like Poma and Sisodiya, were recovered at approximately Rs 800 per CFT.
