Shillong: The Meghalaya police have defended the recent arrest of two members of the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) in connection with the Ichamati twin murder case, citing strong leads and evidence gathered during their investigation.
East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police, Rituraj Ravi, said, “From the day this incident happened we were doing our investigation working on the leads witnesses and we have progressed in that as per the evidence that we have collected and as per the scientific data we have collected and as per the relevant facts of the matter.”
He emphasised, “The arrests were made only after we received strong leads and collected substantial evidence during our investigation.”
The KSU South Khasi Hills had raised questions regarding the arrests of its members by the police. The individuals arrested on Monday night were identified as Mesadapbor Skhembil (26) from Sohra, East Khasi Hills, and Shanborlang Shati (26) from Mawlong Sirdarship, Sohra, East Khasi Hills.
In response to inquiries about the timing of the arrests, Ribok Diengdoh, President of KSU South Khasi Hills, questioned why the police had to pick them up late at night for questioning.
Superintendent Ravi addressed this concern, stating, “Our priority is to make arrests during daylight hours. However, in pursuit of leads and evidence, the timing may not always be convenient. These situations do arise.”

Regarding a large gathering of KSU members at the Sohra police station on Wednesday morning, Ravi said, “Today a crowd numbering round 300-400 gathered at the Sohra police station and they protested against the arrest that we made in connection with the Ichamati case. However, the protest was peaceful and after sometimes they dispersed from the police station premises.”
He added, “They were protesting against this arrest, and we explained that we are investigating the murders, and that law shall take its own course.”
