Shillong: After a long hiatus of eight years, the vibrant Monolith Festival 2024 made a return with the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) inaugurating the event on Thursday at the Khasi Heritage Village in Mawphlang in Meghalaya.
Over three days, the festival promises to be a captivating showcase of the rich cultural tapestry of the Khasi tribe, paying homage to 54 Chieftainships. Attendees can look forward to immersing themselves in a diverse array of arts, crafts, cuisine, music, and dance, all steeped in the traditions of the Khasi people.
The festival’s opening day saw a bustling crowd comprising people from various walks of life, including both domestic and international tourists, flocking to the scenic venue in Mawphlang, renowned for its sacred groves and forests.
Meghalaya’s Deputy Chief Minister graced the occasion as the Chief Guest, accompanied by the Chief Executive Member (CEM) of KHADC, Pyniaid Sing Syiem.
Expressing his appreciation for the efforts of the KHADC in organizing the festival, Deputy Chief Minister Tynsong said, “I acknowledge the efforts made by the KHADC by organizing this festival which celebrates the rich culture and tradition in a way established by our forefathers.”
He further emphasized the importance of preserving and promoting the cultural heritage of the region, urging the KHADC to make the Monolith Festival an annual affair.
The Monolith Festival serves as a dynamic platform for local artisans, craftsmen, and performers to showcase their talents while honoring the legacy of the Khasi tribe.
Chief Executive Member of KHADC, Pyniaid Sing Syiem, highlighted the significance of the festival in showcasing the unique aspects of Khasi culture and tradition to the world. He emphasized the need to preserve and strengthen the Khasi Social Customs Lineage Act, of 1997, as a means of safeguarding the community’s heritage.
“This festival is an opportunity to showcase our rich culture and tradition,” remarked Syiem. “We feel the need to have a platform to showcase the rich and unique Khasi culture, and this festival will display our traditional system of governance, clan system, rites, and rituals to the rest of the world.”
With its vibrant celebrations and cultural showcases, the Monolith Festival 2024 stands as a testament to the enduring spirit and heritage of the Khasi people, drawing visitors from far and wide to experience the richness of their traditions.
